Sometimes My Heart Feels Like This
"This is a painting of spring on Capitol Hill, when the cherry and plum blossoms are in full bloom. Walking
down the street, the beauty and wonder of springtime made me stopped in my tracks.
In trying to convey the riot of color of the blossoms juxtaposed with the green of ivy, I played a lot with
flattening the perspective. I wanted to try to recreate the odd mixture of 3 dimensionality and flatness
that has been the norm since my brain injury.
First I sketched in the piece then sprayed it with water so the canvas was streaked with different colors.
Then began to paint between the streaks, to develop rendered areas contrasted with deliberately flattened
parts of the image.
This was also the first time I left parts of the canvas bare, Letting streaks and bits of primed canvas
create silhouettes suggesting leaves and stems."
