Solid Ambiguities
"As an architect, I was influenced by the Constructivist movement in the Russian Avant Gard in the early 20th century. Constructivists used stripped down, geometric forms. Their visual language existed of forms that they could draw with practical instruments like compasses and rulers. Fast forward to the 21st century and instead of the analog method of drawing with drafting instruments by hand, I am interpreting the movement in my own digital way. Starting with white lines on a black field, simple shapes are delineated. These shapes are transformed into solids with lines projected at 45 degrees. This is the isometric drawing method that architects and engineers use in technical drawings to represent three-dimensional objects in two dimensions. With a color palette of red, yellow, cyan and lime, different planes of these solids are filled, but in an incongruent manner that confuses the planes order needed to perceive these solids as complete. The resulting composition creates a puzzle to eyes and mind to work out."
