Quadrans Circuli Diametrum 1

"The form of the circle finds its way into many of my works. Why the circle? For me the circle is the most universal and archetypal of all forms, used by all cultures from all times to the present. An outgrowth from my architecture, in some of my works I use the grid as the paradigm to organize a composition. Quadrans Circuli Diametrum first started with a grid of circles divided into quadrants with 7 columns and 10 rows for a total of 70 circles. Tick marks, often used in architectural drawings, at the circles centers, emphasize the grid. Like a conductor conducting a symphony with color being the musical notes, with a palette of 28 colors, a color was assigned to each quadrant of each circle and the diamond shapes between the circles. An added layer of complexity was made by cutting strips of diagonals across and floating above the picture plane. Different colors were assigned where the diagonals intersected the quadrants and diamonds below. Like my other Quadrans Circuli pieces, while creating them is meditative and healing, they represent optical dynamism and my goal is to achieve a sense of optical joy to the viewer."
