"This piece is from the Journal series, a body of work I created during a particularly debilitating period of my chronic illness. I had, for the first time in over 20 years of managing symptoms, become so disabled that I could no longer work, exercise, paint, or otherwise live a normal life. Whereas I used to be able to paint for six to eight hours a day - which was required for the laborious process of pointillism - it became normal for me to only manage an hour in the studio, sometimes even less. At that rate, a single painting would've taken months rather than weeks. I turned my frustration into a sort of diary, in the form of small, 10"x10" daily paintings. Some days I could paint up to three hours, resulting in more robust pieces. Other days were represented by just a handful of dots or even blank sheets of paper. Over time, a narrative appeared: a record of my illness, my progress, my instinct to keep working even when my body rebelled, and what evolution could look like for me. Each piece is titled only by its date, like any other diary."
