Nineteen at Forty Five
"As an architect, I was influenced by the Constructivist movement in the Russian Avant Gard in the early 20th century. Constructivists used stripped down, geometric forms. Their visual language existed of forms that they could draw with practical instruments like compasses and rulers. Fast forward to the 21st century and instead of the analog method of drawing with drafting instruments by hand, I am interpreting the movement in my own digital way. In Nineteen At Forty Five, I add a nod to the digital age with a grid of colored squares, representing pixels. Within this grid, pixels are combined together in black to form simple shapes. These shapes are projected with lines at 45 degrees in the picture plane as isometrics. Isometric projection is a method for visually representing three-dimensional objects in two dimensions in technical and engineering drawings. The title is straightforward. There are 19 shapes projected at 45 degrees, but I must admit I put a little riddle in it. If you count the shapes, you might at first come up with 18 when only counting the ones that are black. But if you look closely, you’ll see 1 lone blue shape on top of a black shape that is projected."
