Interrobang

"This piece is a painting on a panel, carefully wrapped in adhesive vinyl and photographed to capture the reflected light bouncing back toward the camera. The vinyl’s glossy surface creates a unique interplay of light and shadow, accentuating the underlying brushstrokes and textures while casting portions of the image into hazy, translucent veils. The wrapping transforms the painting, as reflections dance across the surface, partially obscuring and distorting the marks beneath. The original layers of the painting reveal dark, muted greenish-gray tones, interwoven with fine, crisscrossing lines that resemble a fragmented web or network of scratches. The lines cut through the composition, creating a tension between the controlled geometry of the scratches and the softer, more organic gradients of color below. The vinyl amplifies this contrast, adding areas of stark white reflection that break up the darker tones and add an ephemeral quality, as though the image is in constant flux. Through this method of wrapping and photographing, the painting becomes an exploration of surface and depth, with the vinyl acting as both a protective layer and a medium of distortion. The reflective quality of the vinyl introduces a sense of immediacy and movement, inviting the viewer to question what lies beneath the glossy facade. This process of layering, obscuring, and illuminating creates a work that is at once grounded and ethereal, embodying themes of concealment, transformation, and the ever-changing nature of perception."
