I Contain Multitudes

"This is a more personal work than others with psychological and emotional roots. The "waves" of this piece emerged out of my dissatisfaction with an earlier abstract painting beneath it. I started covering the unsuccessful work with wave and teardrop shapes. As I worked through that process, I felt a connection to all the facets of myself as a person. These facets were created by past life experiences, some of them traumatic, that all reside collectively within me, sometimes in harmony, sometimes uneasily. That led me to experimentation with text in the piece, emphasizing concepts that were reinforced in my earlier life and "crossing out" the concept of "MINE", reflecting my early impression that my thoughts and emotions did not belong to me, but existed in service to others. Painting this work helped me continue to recover my own agency as a person and an artist, letting go of those earlier faulty ideas."
