"Some time back I had painted a set of limestone barns (Limestone Barn and Limestone Barn 2) that celebrated growing up on the great plains where many structures (houses, barns, fences, churches, etc.) are made of the native limestone. While these two original "limestone pieces" were smaller studies on paper I wanted to round out the series, this time on canvas at a larger scale. Instead of a barn this current painting features a springhouse, the one-room structure created in a bygone era to keep the natural springs or well water clean as well as providing a cooler and protected environment to store fruit, vegetables, and other food items. As intended with the original pieces, I wanted Springhouse to convey the sense of the starkness and solitude of structures found on the plains, and through mark making, depict how these isolated structures actually rest upon many layers of life, energy, and movement happening underground. Blue marks and lines symbolize water."
