Geisha's Obi (Kimono Belt)
"This painting draws inspiration from the intricate embroidery found on the obi— the ornate belts that adorn geishas' kimonos, often serving as the focal point of the entire garment. The design blends flower motifs with contrasting geometric patterns, accentuated by gilded elements to evoke the richness of the traditional attire. I sought to capture the textured effect of embroidery using 3D acrylic paints and shifu, a paper thread technique, to recreate the dimensionality of the fabric. In this piece, I envisioned myself quilting together fragments of the obi, substituting paper for cloth to create a unique, tactile representation."
