Frozen Motion

"Coming out of quarantine from Covid in the winter of 2022, I found that my mental health was at an all time high. Since I'd been working remotely, I hadn't needed to spend the majority of my energy carefully monitoring my ADHD/ASD in the office to pass as "normal" or neurotypical. For the first time in my 36 years, I was finally able to peel back the mask to see who I truly was. And I honestly enjoyed who I was getting to know. With this newfound energy, I decided to venture onto the frigid Lake Michigan shoreline to capture the tumultuous waves on the shoreline the months of January to March. Usually, I hated the cold. I have a circulatory disorder that flares up in low temperatures, causing numbness in my fingers and toes so being outside was best avoided during the winter months. Because of that, and the general risk of being on the shoreline during windy, winter days, my best friend accompanied me to several of the shoots. Following Covid protocol, we'd drive separately to meet on the beach, sometimes not having physically seen each other for weeks or months. I realized during those moments that she also was seeing who I'd become as I peeled away my mask. But I never once considered she wouldn't like who she saw. After all, if she'd driven an hour to stand on the beach in January just to make sure I was safe. Those kind of friends always know you better than you know yourself."
