Flux 1
This piece is part of an emerging collection of abstract paintings titled "Flux." The works are a harmonious blend of spontaneity and thoughtful curation of color, focusing on activating space through dynamic compositions and large-scale mark-making. It showcases a shift in color palette compared to Rubenstein's previous works, featuring monochromatic or more subdued hues with moments of vibrant color. The process of creating these pieces starts with applying a wash of hot pink or bright aqua on raw canvas. The artist then adds layers of more muted and neutral colors across the composition by mixing the color from the base layer of the painting with various opposing or complimentary colors, subduing the color of the background. The vibrant color from the base layer is incorporated into the top or final layer of the painting, with some of the color appearing to recede into murky layers and some of the color appearing to come towards you. The result is a cohesive and organized layered effect that keeps your eyes continuously moving around the images.
