Eighty Pieces of Eight
"This piece is an illustration of how my left and right sides of the brain come into play in my creative process. The analytical logic of the left commingles with the creative of the right in this piece. I think it was this duality that steered me to become an architect as architecture requires a duality of the analytical and mathematical with the creative. The form of the circle has been a common geometric vehicle to express myself. While studying architecture at Pratt Institute, I also studied Islamic art and architecture and it is an influence in my art. Please indulge me as I go into the weed on this as the nerd in me can’t help it. The overlapping of circles is used in Islamic art. Grids of Overlapping circles are used to create more complex Islamic designs. When two circles intersect, a pointed ellipse shape is formed. In mathematics, it’s called a Vesica Piscis. I like numbers. Many of my works are titled with numbers. I arrived at the title of Eighty Pieces of Eight as follows: There are six full interlocking circles (divided into quadrants) with 2 half interlocking circles (divided into 2 quadrants) at the top and bottom; 6 + (.5 x 2 + .5 x 2) = 8 circles The circles overlap the adjacent circle quadrants. The color is changed at these intersections forming two pointed ellipse pieces and two wedge shaped pieces. Each full circle has eight pieces in total. Overlaid on the two top and two bottom circles are gear like shapes in grayscale. The intersections of the gears over the intersecting quadrants form eight shaped pieces. All the shapes added up equals 80 pieces."
