Contemporary Southwest

"One of my earlier pieces, I was inspired by the local art in my region of the southwest. I was also inspired by Cubism and its idea of splitting an object and rearranging it. I wanted to make a completely non-objective but southwestern painting that had the feel of cubism without the look of cubism. I started the painting process by sketching out a mountain design with a sphere inside of it, then arranged shapes and symbols in an abstracted way. I used contrasts of warm and cold and played with textural backgrounds. I was proud of this painting because while it is very abstract, i was able to make something completely non-objective with known symbols and objects."
