Construct 045.15
"Construct 045.15 is a purely geometric tessellated abstraction. The title comes from my naming system for my digital files. In this case, it was the 45th file I created in 2015. This piece is an illustration of how my left and right sides of the brain come into play in my creative process. The analytical logic of the left commingles with the creative of the right in this piece. I think it was this duality that steered me to become an architect as architecture requires a duality of the analytical and mathematical with the creative. Without getting too much into the weeds, the parti (architectural speak for central concept) is the hexagon which is the geometric shape that most easily tessellates. Tessellation is an arrangement of shapes closely fitted together, especially of polygons in a repeated pattern without gaps or overlapping. Hexagons have been of great interest to me. The hexagonal shape allows for efficient use of space, maximizing storage capacity while minimizing material usage. It is a wonder that bees know this and utilize it to store their honey. Here, I challenged myself to create an interstitial tessellation, a tessellation within a tessellation manifested in the gear like shapes that fill the hexagons."
