Ciclo de Las Setas

""Ciclo de Las Setas" or "Cycle of Mushrooms" is inspired by the mushroom kingdom and abstractly conveys the growth cycle from mycelium to spores through the earth to the final fruit body. I am greatly inspired by mushroom medicine which has significantly improved my quality of life and hope to convey this vast healing power. Regarding the process, I roamed the town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, taking raw photos of textures to form a large palette of images to digitally assemble and blend. I also researched the growth and healing power of mushrooms. I created four separate paintings. 1. Mycelium 2. Spores 3. Earth 4. Fruit Body. For the mycelium painting I collected macro shots of the lint from the dryer and from my dog’s hair. For the spores painting I used an earthen texture shot of a wall and masked out each individual spore. For the earth painting, I used all the palette shots that reminded me of earth, plants and textures; everything that mushrooms sprout from. Then finally for the fruit body painting, I used many different texture images to create a mushroom trunk and head. This was finished up with the final shading of the mushroom head with dodge and burn techniques as well as adding color pics like yellow and brown and then blending them together. Once all four paintings were combined, the blending stage was done in order to make a cohesive whole out of disparate elements."
