"I read something once about the history of hair and how throughout history, the hair on your head signified your station in life. One description was of a woman in mourning, and the author described her hair as being wild and unkempt as opposed to being neatly and tightly tucked away. The example shown in the book was a black and white illustration. This painting makes me think of that. The bright colors in conjunction with the “mourning hair” is interesting to me. I think the colors change the narrative. Maybe she’s just tired of being neatly and tightly tucked away."
