Almost There
"This hard-edge piece is included in my 'White Line' series of artworks. The white lines are inspired by the works of Frank Stella, particularly his 1980s pieces. The colors are developed on a piece-by-piece basis, from individual color palettes that are dependent on how I envision the outcome.
'Almost There' began with me wanting to do a Frank Stella painting my way. I wanted it to have white lines. I wanted to to be colorful, but without too many colors. Above all, I wanted unique. I thought about this for weeks until I got on the computer and decided I would start with colored squares. Well, that was certainly boring and not at all unique. I thought perhaps if I only used color in the center squares and surrounding them with darker squares would be unique. They were nice, but still not unique. It finally occurred to me that if I turned the squares 45 degrees, it would satisfy me. Nope, it was closer, but I still wasn't feeling it. It wasn't until my mouse accidentally shot the group of squares halfway off the screen did I find unique. That was what I was looking for. The squares appeared to be moving off of the canvas. Or were they coming onto the canvas? I had found unique."
